In Fantasy Life, the player must choose a Life when creating an avatar for the first time. There are 12 Lives in total, and the player can switch between them at any time (with the exception of story quests).

Types of Lives
There are 3 different types of Lives in Fantasy Life: Combat, Gathering and Crafting.

Licence Ranks
There are 10 ranks in each Life Licence:
- Novice
- 0 boost to stats.
- Rank that the player gets when choosing the life for the first time
- Fledgling
- +2 points to main stat and +1 point to sub stat
- Rank achieved after completing or skipping the tutorial quest
- Apprentice
- +4 points to main stat and +2 point to sub stat
- Adept
- +6 points to main stat and +3 point to sub stat
- Expert
- +8 points to main stat and +4 point to sub stat
- Master
- +12 points to main stat and +6 point to sub stat
- At this rank the player is reward with a party at The Crown (no special items received at the party)
- Access to Master Chests, which contain some of the most powerful Weapons in the base game
- Hero
- +16 points to main stat and +8 point to sub stat
- King Erik Stone rewards the player with Armor or Clothes depending on the life (must talk to him during day)
- Legend
- +20 points to main stat and +10 point to sub stat
- Highest rank in the base game
- King Erik Stone rewards the player with a Weapon or a Tool depending on the life (must talk to him during day)
- Some of the best weapons / tools overall in the base game
- God-in-training / Demi-Creator
- God / Creator
- +24 points to main stat and +12 point to sub stat
- Special rank exclusive to DLC
- Highest rank possible and ultimate goal of any life
