I'm having trouble because I've gotten one of these items and i accidently sold it but I've gone back to the post office hoping that i could get the same costume again but it says "but I've already given you the item for that password" and then it doesn't give me anything so i was wondering if it was possible to actually get the same item twice?.

Not without some outside help. Multiple people have had that issue and those who -really- wanted the items back would get a friend to help. You could create a new save file, go to the Post Office to claim the passwords, then visit a friend's world to leave your items in the giant treasure chest located inside of Castele's Guild Office. Your friend will wait as you exit and re-enter using your main save file. Your main character can then pick up the items from the chest.
